To walk around without any precise plan in this vast district inhabited by more than a third of Venice’s total population, normally you would have to start your journey from the Santa Lucia train station. Just next to the station you will already start to see the landmarks – the very first one being the Abbey of Barefooted Carmes (Scalzi in Italian), one of the world’s most beautiful Baroque-styled sanctuaries. The church is named Santa Maria di Nazareth, a tribute to the Virgin Mother. Walking back on our path, you will realize that the Ponte di Scalzi (The Scalzi Bridge) being in the proximity and the heavy traffic of visitors form together a grand commercial vein named Lista di Spagnia, full of hotels, restaurants, pizzerias, bars, cinemas, shops with souvenirs, flowers, fruits and vegetables blocking their front displays.
