In Venice, the Grand Canal functions just like any other large avenues in the world, yet you’d not find any cars here. The large, central vein of Venice is the city’s most important water-traffic corridor. Everything goes around on water : bagages, furnitures, domestic trashbins, groceries, construction materials, debris coming from demolitions, ambulances, and most certainly, the vaporetti (singular : vaporetto) taken by both Venetians and tourists all day and all night long. Gondolas are undoubtedly the stars on the Grand Canal, world’s most renowned ship, a symbol of Venice. The words “Gondola” and “Gondolier” come from the Venetian dialect, used since more than a thousand years ago. It is widely known that at the 15th century, it existed more than 15,000 Gondolas in Venice.
