About this photo...
A powerful navy was the key of Venice's predominance over the Mediterranean sea, mainly from tle 13th to the 15th century. The Galleys were propelled by two or three masts with square sails and, in case of lack of wind, by oarsmen (wich became soldiers in case of boarding). The biggest galleys, called Triremes (meaning three oars), true sailing fortresses, were operated by more than two hundred oarsmen, arranged by groups of three, as we can see it on this large model presented in the Arsenal Museum.
