The Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) leads from the Doge's Palace to the Prison cells (Prigioni). A prison renowned for being impossible to escape from (although Casanova managed to escape in 1756 as he tells it in his Memoirs). This view is the last glance the prisonners could have on the free world before being locked up.
