In the little island of San Giorgio Maggiore, the famous architect Andrea Palladio began in 1559 the construction of this church and monastery. The church will not be achieved before 1614, with Vincenzo Scamozzi's façade. San Giorgio Maggiore is a perfect counterpart of the San Marco complex on the other side of the Basin.
