Gondolas are long (11 meters) and slender. Their bottom is flat, to allow a greater speed. The boat is asymmetrical so that it can bear the weight of an only oarsman standing on its left side. A gondola is expensive : let's say the price of a fine car. But well maintained, it can last more than thirty years.
